Venice, CA. Completed 2024.
Located behind a 1947 post-war bungalow (Storybook Bungalow), the Rickrack Cottage is a garage-conversion ADU. In both the original house and new ADU, the client was interested in uncovering and enhancing a sense of history and place of an oft-overlooked residential vernacular, the storybook-style. Beginning its life as a two-car garage, the Rickrack Cottage has transformed into an open plan space nestled into a native garden and ship-like, sculptural deck. The bright interior is grounded with the contrasting black casework of an equipped wall that includes the kitchen and storage spaces. A sky-lit black bathroom in glossy and matte tile work completes the cottage with a deep soaking tub.
